Kudzu Kings are a musical outfit from Oxford, MS. Their sound is a unique blend of country, bluegrass and improvisational rock & roll. The band actively toured together for almost ten years (1994-2003). In those years together, the band gained considerable popularity in the Southeast, Colorado, and Texas filling prominent music venues, in addition to spreading their talent the rest of the nation and Canada with a number of successful tours. They have shared the stage many times with Widespread Panic (whom with longtime Kudzu guitarist George McConnell eventually joined up with in 2002 and has since left) as well as with many other prominent artists of that time (including Ratdog, Leftover Salmon, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Junior Brown and Aquarium Rescue Unit, just to name a few). Kudzu Kings have also welcomed a number of guest musicians to collaborate over the years (sometimes sitting in for several shows for absent members) including Chris Etheridge (Flying Burrito Brothers, Gram Parsons, Willie Nelson), Bucky Baxter (pedal steel and guitar w/ Bob Dylan , Ryan Adams, Los Lobos), John "Jojo" Hermann (Widespread Panic), Cody Dickinson (North Mississippi All-Stars), Tony Furtado, and Jeff Austin (Yonder Mountain String Band).
Their debut CD was recorded with Grammy Award winning producer Jim Gaines (Santana, Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble) at the helm. Their second release, Y2Kow, was co-produced by the band and Jeffrey Reed, of the critically acclaimed Black Dog Records (and protégé to both Gaines and Jim Dickinson). By selling records at shows and with the help of some regional distribution, Kudzu Kings sold ten thousand units and received considerable radio airplay domestically and overseas through AAA and college formatted stations.
Today, members are working on various projects, both solo and with other Kudzu members, and still come together based on obscure astrological events or big paychecks to experience the unique chemistry that is the Kudzu Kings. Some current projects the Kings have sired are Pithecanfunkus Erectus, Tate Moore and the Cosmic Door, Taylor Grocery Band, Sparkle Pants, Five and Dime, Blackbird Hour, Rocket 88, and , oh, whatever Chaffe remembers.
